Bach & Tallis

Program five looks back before Bach once again, this time to the great English Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis. We strike a Lenten note “from the depths” with Cantata BWV 131 “Aus der Tiefen,” Tallis’s “Lamentations of Jeremiah,” and Motet BWV 228 Fürchte dich nicht (“Do not fear”).

2025/26 Programs

BACH & EARTH

October-November 2025
Season Four opens with a celebration of abundance and invitation through cantatas BWV 187 Es wartet alles auf dich (“Everything depends on you”) and BWV 76 Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes (“The heavens declare the glory of God”). Accompanied by strings, oboes, organ, and trumpet, fourteen singers bring to life vivacious choral fugues and expressive recits and arias along with lush a cappella offerings such as Ticheli’s “Earth Song” and Reger’s “Morgengesang.”

January-February 2026
In a turn to the painful side of life, Program Two pairs the lament of BWV 12 Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen (“Weeping, lamenting, worry, apprehension”) with the consolation of BWV 127 Herr Jesu Christ, wahr' Mensch und Gott (“Lord Jesus Christ, true man and God”), as trumpet and oboes are joined by bassoon and baroque recorders. Exquisite choral works by Palestrina (Sicut Cervus) and Arnesen (“Even When He Is Silent”) round out the program.

BACH & TRIUMPH

March 2026
Death and darkness are unravelled in the cantatas of program three: the epic BWV 4 Christ lag in Todesbanden (“Christ lay in death’s bonds”) with its solemn Easter hallelujahs, and the brilliant BWV 67 Halt im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ (“Keep in memory Jesus Christ”) with its promise of peace that quenches fear. In this program, baroque horn joins the ensemble for the first time.

April-May 2026
Season Four concludes with trumpets, tympani, and a doubled choir in a program touching the theme of Christ’s ascension and loving care. Cantata BWV 137 Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren (“Praise the Lord, the mighty king of honour”) explores variations on the familiar hymn by Neander, while Cantata BWV 43 Gott fähret auf mit Jauchzen (“God ascends with shouts of joy”) revisits the heroic drama of Easter with grand perspective.
