A CIRCLE OF CONCERTOS

September 2026
Season Five launches with an all-instrumental program of Bach’s radiant keyboard and violin concertos, one night only, presented in partnership with The Rosedale Centre. Acclaimed violinist Mayumi Seiler joins pianist-composer Godwin Friesen, harpsichordist Christopher Bagan, up-and-coming talent Junia Friesen, and an ensemble of nine exceptional chamber musicians to realize four Baroque masterpieces with fresh perspective: Keyboard Concerto No. 5 in F Minor, BWV 1056; Concerto for Two Keyboards in C Major, BWV 1061; Violin Concerto in E Major, BWV 1042; and Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor, BWV 1043.

In TBP's first choral offering of the season, baroque flutes and oboes join luminous voices to express the ecstasy of Cantata BWV 173 Erhöhtes Fleisch und Blut ("Exalted flesh and blood") and the euphoria of Cantata BWV 30 Freue dich, erlöste Schar ("Rejoice, redeemed host"), a two-part work originally written for the Feast of St. John the Baptist and featuring dramatic solos in all voices, including the striking soprano aria, "Eilt, ihr Stunden" ("hurry, you hours").

February-March 2027
“My God, how long, ah how long?” begins the poignant lament of Cantata BWV 155 Mein Gott, wie lang, ach lange? before turning to consolations both musical and poetic for the forlorn soul. After that, Cantata BWV 123, Liebster Immanuel, Herzog der Frommen (“Dearest Immanuel, leader of the righteous”) follows a similar cycle of longing and solace, in this choral program presented as encouragement for times of betrübter Einsamkeit (“sorrowful loneliness”).

BACH & ANGELS

April-May 2027
Trumpets, timpani, and a doubled choir return in a season finale built around two glorious works originally written for the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels and celebrating the role of heavenly beings in the care of humankind: Cantata BWV 149 Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg ("Songs are sung with joy") and Cantata BWV 130 Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir ("Lord God, we all praise you"), which creates a choral fantasia around the famous hymn tune, "Old Hundredth."
